10 Simple Tips to Keep Your Teeth Healthy and Strong

10 Simple Tips to Keep Your Teeth Healthy and Strong

1. Brush Twice Daily — The Right Way

Brushing twice a day is the foundation of good oral health. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Brush at a 45-degree angle to the gums using gentle circular motions for 2 full minutes. Replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months.

2. Never Skip Flossing

Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between teeth where your toothbrush cannot reach. Do it once daily, preferably at night. If traditional floss is awkward, try a water flosser or interdental brushes.

3. Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods

Sugar feeds the bacteria in your mouth that produce acid and cause cavities. Limit sweets, fizzy drinks, and acidic foods. When you do consume them, rinse with water immediately afterwards.

4. Stay Hydrated — Drink Plenty of Water

Water washes away food particles and keeps your mouth from drying out. Dry mouth is a major risk factor for tooth decay because saliva neutralises acids and has antibacterial properties.

5. Use Mouthwash

An antibacterial or fluoride mouthwash kills bacteria and strengthens enamel. Use it after brushing at night. Avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes if you have dry mouth — they make it worse.

6. Avoid Tobacco Products

Smoking and chewing tobacco dramatically increase risk of gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth loss. They also stain teeth severely and slow healing after any dental procedure.

7. Eat a Balanced Diet

Calcium-rich foods (dairy, leafy greens, almonds) strengthen tooth enamel. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium. Crunchy vegetables like carrots and celery naturally clean teeth and stimulate saliva production.

8. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

Worn bristles clean less effectively and harbour bacteria. Replace your toothbrush every 3–4 months, or immediately after being ill.

9. Never Ignore Dental Problems

A small cavity costs ₹2,000 to treat. Left untreated, it becomes a root canal (₹8,000) or extraction requiring an implant (₹35,000). Early treatment is always cheaper, faster, and less painful.

10. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months

Professional cleaning removes tartar that no amount of brushing can shift. Routine check-ups catch problems early. Most serious dental conditions are completely preventable with regular check-ups.
